Bradley Cooper is reporting for duty. The Oscar-nominated actor is set to star as Duke, the field commander of the G.I. Joe team, in Danny McBride's new G.I. Joe movie at Paramount. Deadline broke the news Thursday, with The Hollywood Reporter confirming the casting.

The pairing is the kind of left-field match that makes sense the longer you look at it. McBride, best known for comedy juggernauts like Eastbound & Down, Vice Principals, and The Righteous Gemstones, is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jeff Fradley and John Carcieri, his Gemstones collaborators. Cooper has worked with McBride before, guest-starring as Elijah Gemstone in a 2022 episode of the HBO series, so the two already have a working relationship.

Per Deadline's reporting, Cooper sat at the top of McBride's casting wishlist. The actor was eager to begin negotiations after reading the script and sitting down with the director, despite a schedule that would make most agents wince.

McBride has been teasing a grounded take for months. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast earlier this year, he described the film as suspense and action rather than comedy, centered on Duke and a team of fellow Joes. One key setting: Springfield, the fictional town from the comics that is secretly run entirely by Cobra. McBride's pitch won out over a competing script from Max Landis, whom Paramount had hired in parallel before moving forward with McBride's version alone.

The film is a full reboot of the franchise. It stands apart from the three previous Paramount entries (2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, 2013's G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and 2021's Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins), and it is separate from the G.I. Joe/Transformers crossover that was once on the table and is no longer in development. Channing Tatum played Duke in the first two films; Cooper steps into a more seasoned iteration of the character, a commander rather than a rising soldier.

The production team is set. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, and Zev Foreman are producing through Hasbro Entertainment.

Timing remains the open question. Cooper is currently in Europe shooting his Ocean's Eleven prequel with Margot Robbie, which Paramount has dated for June 27, 2027. Expectations are that he moves to G.I. Joe early next year, with a possible theatrical bow in summer 2028.

For actors, the casting is a reminder of what range actually looks like at the top of the call sheet. Cooper built his name in broad comedies (The Hangover), proved his dramatic weight (Silver Linings Playbook, American Sniper), then reinvented himself as a writer-director with A Star Is Born and Maestro. Taking on Duke is not a retreat into franchise safety. It is a performer choosing a physical, ensemble-leader role in someone else's vision, trusting a script enough to rearrange a packed calendar for it
