Keanu Reeves is a master of the late-career pivot. First it was John Wick, turning a retired hitman into a decade of box office. Then it was Sonic the Hedgehog, and its sequel, as the voice of Shadow. Now he is doing it again with a part that was already cast, already shot, and already built around someone else.
Reeves has stepped in to star in Maelstrom, the Apple film that was originally built around Alan Ritchson. The casting is unusual because the role was not just written for Ritchson. It was filmed with him. Ritchson shot the picture in 2024, completed the role, and then, according to Variety, had to leave the project. As with all such recastings, the studio faced a choice: reshoot the part with someone else, or let the film live with a ghost. Apple chose the former.
The title Maelstrom refers, appropriately, to chaos. The movie is based on the 2023 stage play by Christopher Chen, whose earlier work includes The Hundred-Year Play. The play itself was a kind of meta-farce about a failed actor and a successful one, two women, and a vortex. The film version is being directed by Peter Farrelly, whose career has moved from the broad comedy of Dumb and Dumber to the more dramatic work of Green Book, which won Best Picture. He is directing from a script by Chen, which means the adaptation comes from the play's own author. The cast includes David Duchovny and Daniel Radcliffe, who remain in the film, along with Reeves.
The part of Ritchson in the film was a lead. He played Eric, a former child star whose career has collapsed, now trapped in a vortex of his own making. Reeves will now play that role. The role of Eric's rival, a successful actor, is played by Radcliffe. Duchovny plays the director of a play within the play. The film's premise, in other words, is about actors, and the casting change is itself a kind of meta-commentary on the business: one actor's part, another actor's rescue.
The reason for the recasting is, officially, a scheduling conflict. Ritchson had to leave the project after filming, according to Variety, because of a conflict with his schedule. The nature of that conflict has not been disclosed. Ritchson is one of the busiest actors in Hollywood at the moment, with the Amazon series Reacher, which he leads, and a slate of films including The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and Ordinary Angels. The recasting was first reported by Variety, and the film's production company, Skydance, has not commented.
The film is being produced by Skydance, with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger and A.J. Dix producing. The film's executive producers include Chen. The film is an Apple Original, and it is expected to be released on Apple TV+. The film's production budget has not been disclosed, but the reshoot is expected to be a significant expense.
The recasting is a reminder of how fragile film production can be, even for a film that is already in the can. Ritchson shot the film, and then had to leave. Reeves, who is 62, will now step in to play a role that was originally written for a 43-year-old. The age difference is not insignificant, but Reeves has made a career out of playing characters who are older than they look, and younger than they are.
The film's title, Maelstrom, is a reference to the chaos that the characters find themselves in. The film's director, Farrelly, has said that the film is about the chaos of the entertainment industry, and the chaos of life. The film's cast, including Reeves, Radcliffe and Duchovny, are all actors who have made careers out of playing characters who are in chaos.
For actors, the lesson of Maelstrom is not about the recasting, but about the part itself. Eric is a former child star whose career has collapsed. Reeves, who was a child actor himself, knows what that feels like. He started acting at 15, and he has seen the business from both sides. The part of Eric is a part that Reeves can play from experience, and the film's premise, about a failed actor and a successful one, is a premise that Reeves understands.
The film is expected to be released in 2027, and it will be one of the most anticipated films of the year. The recasting has only increased the anticipation, and the film's cast, including Reeves, Radcliffe and Duchovny, are all actors who have made careers out of playing characters who are in chaos.
