Scrubs returned Wednesday night with a two-episode Season 2 premiere that leaned hard on the legacy cast. Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) got a showcase across both episodes, and three new recurring players joined the rotation: SNL alum John Higgins as Grant, the new Chief Resident, and Keyla Monterroso Mejia as surgical nurse Mimi. Tamera Mowry-Housley will also guest star as pediatric doctor Dr. Steffie.

Showrunner Aseem Batra told Deadline that Cox's readmission to Sacred Heart at the end of episode 2 was just to get him treatment, and the point was reassurance: "he's going to be fine, that yes, this is an ongoing issue, but he's going to be fine." He won't appear in the majority of episodes but returns for two more later in the season. As for Carla, Judy Reyes is a series regular on High Potential, which films in Los Angeles while Scrubs shoots in Vancouver, but she will recur for five to six episodes total.

The premiere also reshuffled the intern deck, with the rest of the interns rotating so each gets a real arc. Joel Kim Booster departed over a creative decision and X Mayo left over scheduling. Scott Foley returns as Sean in episode 3, and Johnny Kastl is back at season's end.

Key facts:
- Two-episode Season 2 premiere aired Wednesday on ABC
- Dr. Cox appears in two more episodes later this season; Carla recurs for five to six
- New faces: John Higgins (Chief Resident Grant), Keyla Monterroso Mejia (nurse Mimi), Tamera Mowry-Housley (guest star)
- Departures: Joel Kim Booster (creative decision), X Mayo (scheduling)

Why this matters: Revival math is brutal: honor the legacy cast without letting nostalgia eat the new generation. Batra's rotating-intern structure is a smart solve, giving newcomers full episodes instead of background duty. And the Cox/Carla logistics are a reminder of the modern actor's reality: the best people are always booked, and showrunners now build seasons around everybody's second job.
