The biggest media merger in years just got its leadership team. David Ellison has named Ynon Kreiz, the Mattel CEO who turned Barbie into a billion-dollar movie, as co-CEO of the combined Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery company.
Ellison remains chairman and CEO, handling strategy, creative, technology and talent relationships. Kreiz, who starts October 5, takes day-to-day operations and integration of the combined businesses. "Bringing together Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery to create a next-generation global media company is a transformational moment for our industry," Ellison said. The deal is expected to close October 6.
The appointment came minutes after a federal judge approved the settlement of the antitrust suit brought by state attorneys general, clearing the merger's last hurdle. The combination unites Warner Bros. with Paramount, HBO Max with Paramount+, MTV with Discovery, and CBS News with CNN.
Key facts:
- Ynon Kreiz (Mattel CEO, 8 years) named co-CEO of combined Paramount-WBD
- David Ellison remains chairman and CEO; Kreiz starts October 5, deal closes October 6
- Kreiz oversaw Mattel's transformation into an entertainment company, crowned by Barbie
- Judge approved antitrust settlement, removing the final obstacle
Why this matters: Studio mergers don't just change letterheads, they change who gets hired. Kreiz turned a toy company into a movie studio by betting on IP, and now he runs day-to-day on a combined lot with HBO, DC and Paramount's slate under one roof. For actors, new regimes mean new taste, and entire slates get rebuilt around it. Stay visible, stay flexible, and make sure the new decision makers know your name before the musical chairs stop.
